The kids made it to school

I missed my workout last night because we were busy getting ready for the first day of school. Oh well. I'll have to work out on Saturday to make up for it. What genius decided to have the first day of school on a Thursday anyway? The good news is that both kids made it to school and no one was late (including me.) The tricky part is getting Nick home from school. I'm going to have to take my lunch break late and go pick him up. What a pain.

Here's my log for yesterday:
B: oatmeal, blueberries, soymilk
L: veggie burger & fries (yay burger king!)
D: Jamaican red beans and rice, huge salad
S: soy ice cream sandwich

Went for a run

Sean got me a present yesterday. It's the Nike+ running sensor and shoes. It's insanely cool. I just had to take it for a spin. As soon as you plug the little thingy into the iPod, it adds the nike+ stuff to the menu. Then you just stick the sensor in the shoe and you're ready to go. When you go for a run, you just go to the menu and pick your workout goal (time, distance, calories or open ended) and then take off. Along the way it tells you how you're doing. When you get to the halfway point, it tells you so you can turn around. A neat feature is if you hold down the menu button, it automaticly plays your psych song. I still need to pick a psych song. I have to put some thought into that. When you reach your goal it lets you know but you can keep going if you want. When I reached my 30 minutes, I still had a little ways to go (that hill back up to my house is steep) so my final workout time was 30 minutes, 59 seconds. I ran 2.6 miles and averaged 11 minutes, 53 seconds per mile. My only complaint was that you couldn't see the menu when the iPod is in the arm strap. It would've been nice to peak at it every now and then to see what my pace was and how far I'd gone.

While I was out running, Emily made dinner. We've decided to make that her once a week chore. She made a fabulous vegetarian dinner of garlic baked tofu, rice and a tomato salad. The only problem was that there wasn't quite enough of it. I told her next time she should put some cut up veggies in the pan with it so there's more. She took a chicken recipe and used tofu instead. She probably could've cut the amount of margarine she used in half (when you cook tofu, you actually want it to dry out a little) but maybe that's why it turned out so good. At least there was a ton of melted margarine left in the pan so we didn't consume all of it. Emily said she wants to make a veggie stir-fry next. Nick's planning to make dinner tomorrow. I think he wants to make Jambalaya. I think it would be good with veggie sausage and red beans instead of the sausage and shrimp we used to use.

Here's my log for yesterday:
B: oatmeal, blueberries, soymilk
S: orange
L: veggie stir fry with noodles
D: garlic baked tofu, tomato salad, rice
S: vegan chocolate cake

Back to School

Well summertime fun is over and the kids are going back to school on Thursday. Nick's starting high school and I got to go register him yesterday. So I'm stuck waiting in line to turn in paperwork behind a group of teenage girls. Two of them had tramp stamps (those slutty lower back tatoos) and two had nose rings. One of them was on her cell phone yelling at her parents because they forgot to give her money for a yearbook. They were all cussing like sailors. At one point, they let about six boys cut in front of me in the line. I so wanted to smack them around. I really, really hope I wasn't that obnoxious in high school. I know I was obnoxious but I don't think I was THAT bad. *sigh* I feel like a bitter old lady now. I'm just glad my kids aren't a-holes.

On Sunday we got back from a great vacation in Oregon. I got to hang out with my brother and sister-in-law. Lori has another book coming out in November a fourth book coming out next spring and and a fifth book in the works. She's a writing machine. She's made $12 (which is better than the nothing that most aspiring authors make.) Anyway, Emily got to spend lots of time with her cousin Jenny who's only four months younger than her. We couldn't seperate them with a crowbar. My nephew Daniel is going off to college at the end of the month (now that makes me feel REALLY old.) He's going to BYU Idaho which is where Sean started his college life. So Sean got to regale him with tales of college in Idaho. My neice Katie is sixteen and has a boyfriend. I got to meet him. He seems harmless. Daniel thinks he's a dweeb. We also drove up to Mount St. Helens in Washington. Wow, that was cool. I was in kindergarden when it erupted. I don't remember when it happened. I guess I was too busy watching Sesame Street at the time.

After a few days in Portland, we drove out to Bend. On the way there we checked out Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. There were people seriously skiing in August. We walked up to where the snow was and took lots of pictures. Then we went to Trillium Lake which coincidentally looks almost exactly like the before pictures of Mount St. Helens. When we got to Bend, we got to hang out with Kim a bit and meet her new husband. He seems like a nice guy. Kim's new hobby is spinning fire which is really cool. While we were in Bend, we went and checked out Newberry Crater. It's freaking awesome! We spent a whole day there. There's a little dirt road that you can drive to the top of Paulina Peak (almost 8000 feet.) The view was stunning. We also went to the High Desert Museum which was neat. We spent like three hours there.

After Bend, we went back to Portland. My friend Liz drove down from Seattle and I got to meet her husband and her cute little baby girl. I hadn't seen her in forever. I think it was at Kim's first wedding back when Emily was a baby. It was cool hanging out with her again (I really need to get better at keeping track of people.) Then we flew home and crashed from exhaustion. It was a good trip.

Wow, that was a long blog! I was going to put my new exercise rotation in but I think I'll post that seperately. Here's my log for yesterday:

B: oatmeal, blueberries, soymilk
L: Lemon Tofu, Brown Rice
D: Mushroom Pizza, huge green salad

The Children are Back

It's good to have the kids home again. Emily's already got my whole Saturday planned. Apparently we're going for a bike ride and then we'll be doing yoga and after that we'll be doing our nails while watching Invader Zim. We'll see how much of that actually happens. We got home at almost 2:00 Tuesday morning because of road construction. We had to take a detour in Riverside that took us all over town. It was annoying. Last night I got back to my exercise routine which was nice. I did Super Cardio Death Mix. I was a sweaty mess at the end but I felt like I accomplished something. Tonight will be weights of some kind. I'm thinking Muscle Endurance. That should be fun. I've decided that I eat out for lunch too much so I'm starting to pack my lunch again. Today I made a fake egg salad sandwich (made with tofu and fat-free Nayonaise) with a salad and some cantaloupe. I'm thinking for tomorrow, I'll grill some zucchini and eggplant on the old george forman grill and make a wrap with that and some hummus and some tomato slices. Maybe I'll throw some kale in there, too. Sounds tasty, doesn't it? Friday we'll probably go out to stir fresh which is what we usually do on Fridays. If you don't eat meat, it's pretty hard to make stir fresh food fattening.

Here's what I ate yesterday:
B: 1/2 c. oatmeal, 1 banana, 3/4 c. soymilk
L: vegetable and tofu stir-fry with brown rice
S: 17 soy crisps
D: White Bean Cassoulette with tofu sausage and a salad
